Diptyque was founded by three artist friends with a shared love of nature, travel and beauty: Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Montadre-Gautrot and Yves Coueslant. Originally, the boutique at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris offered home furnishing fabrics designed by Desmond and Christiane, as well as decorative objects and pieces brought back from their travels. In 1963, Diptyque’s very first scented candle was born, sparking the beginning of a unique olfactory journey.

Throughout the sixties, the Maison stepped into its role as a pioneer, focusing on its ‘classic candles’ as scented decorative items through which to craft unique atmospheres. Every scented Diptyque candle has been an ode to this one-of-a-kind heritage and artisanal craftsmanship. Since then, our room fragrances have been designed as opportunities to explore nature through the constellation of botanical families that make up our fragrant herbarium.

Since it launched, the Maison Diptyque has emerged as a scented candle expert and trailblazer, harnessing our longstanding heritage and expertise as a candlemaker and perfumer. Our know-how is rooted in our candles’ high-quality burning and diffusion powered by our candlemaking expertise and the unique scents that capture the fragrances of the natural world, brought to life by Diptyque’s artistic vision and the Maison’s perfumer friends.

Diptyque candles are buoyed by razor-sharp alchemy to ensure optimal fragrance diffusion, with each fragrance and format taking shape through a unique combination of waxes and wick. Diptyque's master waxers in Paris and Provence blend up to eight types of waxes, carefully adjusting the materials and wick sizes from their workshops: unique expertise that ensures fragrances are faithfully replicated whether the candle is lit or unlit.

Diptyque’s botanical families and iconic scents

Diptyque taps into nature and draws on its artistic vision to offer up a herbarium of over 50 fragrances split into six botanical families: spices, trees, resins, herbs, flowers and fruits. A stroll to stir the senses:

Spices: as warm as wisps of Narguilé (Narguileh) smoke or as bright and vibrant as Genévrier (Juniper) berries.

Trees: a wander through the forest, with the dusty intensity of a hundred-year-old Chêne (Oak), a trip to the South of France where resinous Cyprès (Cypress) trees await, or smouldering Feu de Bois (Wood Fire).

Resins: a journey through the Middle East to sample vanilla-laced Opopanax or a trip to the Mediterranean and its iconic resinous, spiced Maquis.

Herbs: green and aromatic like Feuille de Lavande (Lavender Leaf) in the South of France, or sun-baked like Foin Coupé (Fresh Mown Hay).

Flowers: a burst of green, springtime florals like freshly-picked Muguet (Lily of the Valley), drenched in dew like Mayday Roses, or immaculate white like heady, intoxicating Jasmin (Jasmine) flourishing on a street corner.

Fruits: the tangy rush of freshly-picked Baies (Berries) or as sweet as a Figuier (Fig Tree) on the brink of ripening.

Diptyque's luxury candles let you craft unique spaces indoors and out. The intensity of the fragrance that is released depends on the size of the candle; small, classic, medium, large, and extra-large candles are available to enrich your spaces with the perfect balance of fragrance and light.

Classic white candles (190g) release a steady stream of scent that lingers after burning for 20 minutes. Perfect for living rooms.

Medium and large candles (300 to 600g) come in vibrant coloured glass or glossy enamelled porcelain for a personal, decorative touch. These are ideal for larger spaces. Extra-large candles (1,500g) come in enamelled stoneware pots for larger indoor spaces and transforming al fresco nights into enchanting, fragrant moments.

Once your candles reach their end, all the pots (whether glass, porcelain or stoneware) can be given a new lease of life and repurposed however you see fit, whether as planters, flower vases, or somewhere to store your belongings.
